Q: What are your best tips for creating definition and preventing color transfer on hooded eyes?
The subject of hooded lids—and how to lift or define them using makeup—ranks high on the list of Gucci's most-asked questions. "I really like hooded eyes," says Gucci of the natural eye shape, which is characterized by excess skin that folds from the brow bone to the lash line and partially obscures the upper lids. For some, like actress Jennifer Lawrence, it's a striking beauty signature that's present from birth. For others, it develops more gradually with age, says Gucci, who has slight hooding at her own outer corners. Admittedly, it can make applying your eye makeup trickier. But the good news, she says, is that "it's all about playing around and having fun."
Eyeliner transfer and smudging can happen more easily when the skin along the brow bone rubs against the lash lines—creating residual oil or friction that leads to smudges. But a fine layer of translucent powder on the lids before you apply color helps, as does keeping your liquid wing thin, and letting it dry thoroughly before opening your eyes.
Gucci often finds it simpler to create definition and pop with smudgy eye pencils—which look that much better as they take on a natural "lived-in" effect. Another favorite strategy? Blending a single luminous brown shadow (in Chocolat) from lash line to crease for depth that simultaneously enhances every eye color.
